But this desire collides with the laws of science and the rules of society, and when Griffin achieves it, he will be rejected by all and treated as an outcast. The novel tells a tragedy typical of loneliness and otherness. Unable to fit into society, Griffin is a sorcerer's apprentice trapped by his own dream. Misanthropic and grotesque, this anti-hero nonetheless never fails to fascinate the reader.
